Common Uses
Jet grouting is often used to control groundwater and stabilize weak or unstable soils.
It can strengthen and support existing foundations.
It provides safe support for excavations.
It helps seal and protect the base of planned excavations from water or instability.
Process
Jet grouting strengthens soil by creating solid shapes of cemented soil (called soilcrete) directly in the ground. A special tool, called a grout monitor, is attached to the end of a drill and lowered to the required depth. From there, high-pressure jets of cement grout (sometimes mixed with water and air) are released through small openings. These jets break up the soil and mix it with grout while the drill is rotated and slowly pulled upward.
There are three main methods:
Single fluid system – only grout is injected.
Double fluid system – grout is injected with air.
Triple fluid system – water and air are used for cutting, and grout is injected separately.
This process can create soilcrete panels, full columns, or partial columns, depending on the design. The final strength and shape depend on the type of soil. Since the method relies on eroding the soil, loose sandy soils are usually easier to treat than sticky clay soils.
